Back in the 1950's, James Beard said a Rueben sandwich is made with Russian Dressing so that is what I use but several years later, I learned that what we call Russian dressing is not what it was back then. The Russian dressing he was thinking about is similar to Thousand Island dressing was back then. It has changed since then too but it is closer to what it was then Russian is today. Nevertheless we got used to Russian dressing on our Ruebens and so that is what I still use. I don't know if Charlie would like it better with Thousand Island or not but so far I have not tried it to find out.
